The Process

This is a little example of the design process, it doesn't stop there, it's just the beggining.

Before
This small apartment was dated, uninviting, and dark. The furniture was a colection of no no's, the carpet was dirty and old and had a “weird” smell, the lighting was poor and it made it feel dark and cold even in a sunny day. There was no visual division between the dinning room and the living room other than a bulky black console table. The fireplace was also dated and there was no space to storage or display anything. The TV was placed on a glass shelve on top 2 large pieces of styrofoam. The mirrors on the wall were cold and were reflecting all the TV wires and no light. The kitchen had no character at all.

Inspiration & boards

After talking with the clients, we all agreed that the apartment needed a full facelift and the main concern was adding light and warmth to the space at a low cost. Also it needed some storage and a look that would be timeless. Their favorite season of the year was fall so I used colors and elements from this specific time of the year as an inspiration. Clean lines, cozy furniture, warm fabrics and some nature elements were the solution. I worked as if there were 4 separate spaces that would blend with each other: the living room, the dinning area, the fireplace and the kitchen. Using the same colors and textures in different amounts or materials in each space, they all look great by themselves but also as a unity.

Final look
Adding a warmer off white tone to the living room wall and the ceiling and a dark chocolate on the dinning room we separated visually one space into 2.  Replacing the carpet with light wood laminate flooring, warm ochre wall color instead of the mirrors, shelves and two build in cabinets in Mahogany as well as the dinning table and the kitchen cabinets made a big difference without breaking the bank accounts.  Confortable upholstery chairs, a large U shaped modular sofa, two dark chocolate stools with slick chromed legs that serve as extra seating space but also as coffee tables, a smaller and lighter to the eye chrome and glass console table, new paintings on the walls, off white tiles and a new more modern ethanol system for the fireplace, a new look for the structural columns and splashes of a tangerine color and sage green along with some nature shaped vases and a lot of new lighting fixtures made this space exactly what the owners wanted: a cozy, warm place to live, relax and entertain that is inviting and will last for a long time.
